Mr. Pence is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Janice S. Pence, three children: Larry (Lisa) Pence of Roanoke, Virginia, David (Jewel) Pence of Roanoke, Virginia, and Christi (Jeff) White of Concord, North Carolina. JW also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 2 step grandsons and a step great-granddaughter.

Mr. Pence was born in Covington, Virginia on July 24, 1935, the son of the late James W. Pence Sr and Rosa Duncan Pence. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his two sisters Charlene P. Diehl and Carolyn P. Wilt.

JW was a lifelong resident of Covington and member of Grace Brethren Church. He retired as a lab technician from AET (formerly Hercules) corporation, after 42 years of service. He was an avid walker and enjoyed gardening and fishing. He played softball for many years of his life and enjoyed watching sports on television. Also, he attended his children’s and grandchildren’s activities and events, always with his wife, Janice, at his side.

A private memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the church on April 4, 2026. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to: Grace Brethren Church 2507 S Carpenter Dr. Covington, Va 24426.
